A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
